Focus on Solutions - Migration on the Fast Track
We’re migrating from Lawson Environment 8.0.3 to Lawson System Foundation 9.0. How can we leverage our Lawson Environment 8.0.3 knowledge to save time getting ready to administer Lawson System Foundation 9.0?
You’re in luck! Lawson Learning offers a program specifically designed for customers migrating from Lawson Environment 8.0.3 to Lawson System Foundation 9.0.

With the introduction of Lawson System Foundation 9.0 came substantial changes in the administration of users, LDAP, WebSphere, and the Portal. In response, Lawson Learning developed a comprehensive program to train customers to set up and manage their Lawson S3 applications and Lawson System Foundation 9.0 environments.

Intended for both new and migrating customers, our classes mixed customers new to Lawson with those who had Lawson experience. We learned that experienced customers were bored with the pace and expected more information about the new administration features.

Hands-on Experience
Two of our skilled Lawson Learning consultants, Shannon Herman and Glen Rexing, designed an accelerated program for customers migrating from Lawson Environment 8.0.3 to Lawson System Foundation 9.0. Leveraging their Lawson expertise, migrating customers can get up to speed, fast. Click here for the Fast Track course list.

The cornerstone of this accelerated program is the three-day Learning Lab, Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Administration for Migration from Environment 8.0.3. The class is offered up to four times a month with record attendance and satisfied customers. One customer remarked: “The hands-on lessons were very helpful. I have a much better understanding of LSF and how I can start implementing.

This course builds on the basic Lawson Environment 8.0.3 Administration skills with new information and hands-on exercises for Lawson administration of users in an LDAP, WebSphere, Portal, and basic Security.

Shannon and Glen also created a new learning environment model that uses logical server partitions for this class. This model provides each learner root access to their own Lawson environment giving a richer hands-on experience

We now use this model for many of our public technical classes.

Announcements - VLabs Pilot Exceeds Expectations

Virtual Learning Labs (VLabs), our new distance learning program, are a great way to learn in an interactive, hands-on environment. It's just like being in the classroom, only easier. Our first VLabs pilots offered in August filled immediately and received rave reviews.

The pilot sessions on August 7 and 9 featured Lawson Add-ins for Microsoft® Office. Lawson expert and inventor of the Microsoft Add-Ins, Don Peterson, and Lawson Learning Project Manager Greg Mellang, presented two sessions each of "Introduction to the Query Wizard” and "Introduction to the Upload Wizard." The second VLabs pilot Advanced Smart Notification®: Links was held on August 28-29. We’ll share more VLabs news in a future issue.

Great feedback and positive evaluations mean more VLabs will soon be on the way. The registration fee for VLabs follows the same pricing structure as Lawson Learning Labs. If the VLab is under four hours, the half-day rate applies.

Spotlight - Meet Dr. Dave

Native Chicagoan David F. Ross, PhD, CFPIM, senior learning consultant at Lawson Learning, recently took time from his busy schedule to talk with SimplySmarter.

What career path led you to Lawson Learning?
I have had a life-long commitment to the profession of education and training. After receiving my doctoral degree from the University of Chicago, I pursued a brief academic career but left the profession due to a tight job market and family concerns. Fortunately, I had been working in distribution and production management through my college years and quickly saw that a very exciting career was available in the field of ERP software education. In 1987, I made the jump to my first software company. Since that time I have held many exciting roles — I founded two education departments, created reams of training documents, and spent countless hours in the classroom. I also taught Operations Management on the university level as well as the APICS CPIM certification program for the Chicago Chapter. I joined the former Intentia as U.S. Education Business Group Manager in 1998 and was attached to Lawson Learning after the merger where I am currently responsible for all customer and internal Lawson M3 Enterprise Management System education in the U.S

What do you enjoy most about training?
As a committed teacher and ERP professional, I have been very fortunate to have been able to spend a career doing what I like the best: communicating new ideas with fellow professionals and writing and reading about breakthrough concepts and current challenges in manufacturing and distribution management. Reading, writing, communicating — all provide the perfect synergy for presenting a unique perspective to my Lawson M3 System classroom tasks.

You’ve published dozens of articles and several books. How does your writing impact your teaching, and vice versa?
Well, obviously they are mutually supportive. However, recently I’ve become more theoretical with my writing, focusing on business strategies versus the nuts and bolts. Back in the early 90s I got the feeling that the next wave was going to be distribution – along with a new concept called supply chain management. I migrated to these areas and that’s where I’ve focused most of my writing over the last decade.

In addition to writing, how do you stay involved in the industry?
Constantly learning and working with our software documentation gives me insight into the current best practices. I also try to stay active as a business professional, frequently serving as a spokesman for the industry and speaking at professional meetings and seminars.

How do you spend your leisure time?
What leisure time? Lawson M3 is my life. Seriously, I do find time on the weekends for gardening, running, and reading. And when I’m not doing that, I’m writing. The last two chapters of my latest book will be finished soon, and then we’ll see what’s next.

Note: The Intimate Supply Chain: Leveraging the Supply Chain to Manage the Customer Experience is due for release by St. Lucie Press in late 2007.
