It's no surprise that Bevan Bryan and Keith Thompson are the first Lawson customers to complete the Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Customer Certification Program in a Windows environment. They work for Mercury Companies — a business with a do-it-yourself philosophy — and a Lawson customer for nearly five years. After realizing it was time to migrate to Lawson System Foundation 9.0, they examined their options for managing the change, and decided certification was the best choice.
"We made the decision to handle this ourselves because we knew it would be more cost effective," said Bevan, HRIS Manager for Mercury Companies. "We have an environment slightly more complex than your average Windows customers, and the other options we considered were more expensive."
"It makes you a little bit apprehensive to take it on yourself," added Keith, a System Administrator and Developer. "But there are lots of benefits. We work for our company and we will continue to work for our company, and this gave us an opportunity to challenge ourselves and improve our skills."
The process moved quickly; from the first training sessions in June and July to the October 1 go live. "It was fast, but not unreasonable," explained Keith. "One of our biggest challenges was updating our custom applications first to work with the new model. After that, the installation and migration went very smoothly."
Both Keith and Bevan attribute their success to having over a decade of Lawson technical experience. "It's definitely not for someone who's only been with Lawson for a couple of years," Keith cautioned. "You want to be able to rely on prior knowledge. Either that or give yourself plenty of time."
They also praised the hands-on training experience, excellent instruction guides and manuals, and personal assistance from Lawson Professional Services. "We had regular weekly status calls with Lawson and access to Lawson people intimate with the program. Whenever we sent an e-mail to Mark Deutsch and Josh Kirkpatrick, our Lawson contacts, they always got back to us within a day," Bevan remarked. "And for those critical points during the conversion they were even more accessible. They were really great."
For those interested in pursuing the Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Customer Certification Program, they offered the following advice: "I would highly recommend a team — either two or three going through it," Keith suggested. "That way you're really able to play off each other and have someone else to talk to."
Right now there's also a compelling business reason to certify more than one staff member. Lawson Learning is offering a special promotion to customers interested in the Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Customer Certification Program. Sign up two employees for the price of one and take advantage of our temporary rate reduction. To speak with someone in Lawson Professional Services about the Customer Certification Program or other LSF 9.0 Migration options please send an e-mail to LPSExtendedServices@Lawson.com.
