One of the first things you’ll notice when meeting Patti Martin, Senior Learning Consultant for the Lawson S3 Enterprise Financial Management (EFM) suite, is her passion for teaching. Patti delights in meeting different people in her classes and hearing how they do business. “I’m excited every time I walk into the classroom, and I try to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone,” she says.
Patti believes in the importance of learning; and for her, training means helping people succeed. “I think giving learners the knowledge and skills they need to be successful is a great investment,” she explains. “If you understand what you’re doing, you’ll enjoy it more and contribute more to your organization.”
Patti received a B.A. in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and became a certified public accountant. After 13 years of professional experience in finance and accounting, including an auditing background with a national public accounting firm, she decided to try something different. That something was teaching — and now, more than 10 years later, she still looks forward to every new teaching encounter.
Patti’s extensive background in financials and her knowledge of procurement and reporting brings her teaching to life. Among the many Enterprise Financial Management sessions she offers are the General Ledger courses, including Report Writer and Allocations, as well as Accounts Payable and Invoice Matching. “When I teach, I tell real business stories,” says Patti.“I can relate to everything the class is doing because I did it. I know what it’s like to close your books at months-end, or work with diverse groups of end users. I give people as much practical advice as I can in the time we have.”
Patti is also passionate about quality. Last year she was instrumental in rolling out a 3-day session titled Training Skills for anyone who teaches Lawson courses. “Quality delivery and quality learning solutions are so important to me,” says Patti. “We want to make sure whoever is teaching has the necessary training skills. It’s not just product knowledge. It takes skill to effectively deliver a Lawson course to our customers.”
