Life-long learning — now a requisite for success in nearly every job — can be acquired in many ways. Traditional classroom training may be the best solution in some situations, while self-paced instruction is preferred in another. Virtual Learning Labs (vLabs) with their real-time interaction, hands-on exercises, and learn-from-your-desk approach are often exactly what a customer wants. Tips and Hints

Q: Can my organization identify one or more people as Training Approvers?

A: Yes, you can set up as many approvers as you need. The approval process is triggered by information entered in the “Training Approver” field on an individual's Support User Profile.
Here’s how to set up training approval for each employee who needs it:

  1. Ask your support.lawson.com Security Administrator to populate the “Training Approver” field with the name of the approver. NOTE: If you don’t know who your Security Administrator is, log on to support.lawson.com; click the “My Profile” button and then the “My Security Administrator(s)” link.
    • Training Approvers need valid login access to the Learning Management System.
    • The name in the “Training Approver” field must match the approver’s Support User Profile user name.
  2. After setup is complete, Training Approvers will receive notification from the Learning Management System each time an employee registers.
  3. Training Approvers can process registrations by accessing Pending Approvals from the“Task” link on the toolbar and approving the requested training.

View the Training Approver screen image (PDF). If you still have questions or need more detail, send an e-mail to Lawson Learning at lawsonlearning@lawson.com.

If you have a hint to share — or would like a tip to help solve a problem you're facing — let us know and we'll send you an answer and consider it for a future issue.

Focus on Solutions

Staying Up To Date with vLabs

My staff members are experienced Lawson users who have the basics down. How can we ensure we’re getting the most out of our Lawson application and stay on top of the latest enhancements?

Virtual learning labs (vLabs) are one of the best ways to keep your staff fresh and up to date with a minimum investment in time and resources.

Designed to build on prior Lawson knowledge, vLabs take experienced users to the next level. Customers learn the nuances, gain understanding, and are able to absorb information they may have missed during the implementation knowledge transfer. In a tightly packaged format, vLab training sessions focus on best practices for integrating Lawson to improve business processes.

“Our virtual learning labs take place in a constructive, interactive environment that is just like being in the classroom,” says Americas Learning Director Jacquelyn Olson. “Participants have access to the Lawson training server to complete hands-on exercises, and they benefit from live interactions with the instructors and others taking the class through chat, breakout sessions, and various activities designed to promote discussion and critical thinking.”

“And vLabs are convenient,” adds Olson. “You don’t have to disrupt your work and life with travel. Also, there’s no delay in getting started — what you learn in the morning, you can put into practice in the afternoon.”

New Topics: To meet the growing interest in virtual learning opportunities, we’re expanding our vLab course offerings. We listened to your requests, and plan to add four new topics to the vLab schedule in the fall, with more to come by the end of the year. Watch for Advanced Query Wizard, Requisition Self-Service, Websphere with Lawson System Foundation 9.0, and Process Flow Integrator. Not seeing the course you need? Submit your ideas to Lawson Learning and we will consider your request for future vLab development. Please e-mail your topic suggestion to lawsonlearning@lawson.com.

Now is a good time to give vLabs a try. We have a summer promotion on our two introductory courses from the Microsoft Add-ins series. And with this training accomplished, you’ll be ready for the advanced vLab in the fall.

July Promotion: Maximize your training dollars by taking advantage of our 2-for-1 special on Microsoft Add-ins and get two learning experiences for the price of one. You have a few options for cashing in on this special offer: One person can sign up for both classes; you can send two people to one class; or you can send two people, one in each class.

Introduction to Query Wizard: Lawson Add-ins for Microsoft Office, July 16, 9:00-Noon
• Introduction to Upload Wizard: Lawson Add-ins for Microsoft Office, July 16, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

We’ll handle registration: To take advantage of this promotion, you must register by calling us at 1-888-449-8931 or sending an e-mail to lawsonlearning@lawson.com. We will manually process your registration. Please note: vLab training sessions are not part of your Online Learning Library subscription; there is a separate fee.

If you have a problem that's looking for a solution, send us an e-mail. We’ll get back to you promptly, and consider featuring your question in a future issue of SimplySmarter.

Plan Ahead with our Long Range Course Schedules
For the first time, we are publishing S3 and M3 training schedules with a longer view. To simplify year-end planning, you’ll now be able to see at a glance when classes are scheduled through December. Download and print the handy PDF files in the “Upcoming Classes” section of SimplySmarter.

Keep in mind that course schedules can change. Always check online at http://support.lawson.com for the latest information. We may offer more sessions as demand increases, update titles or course codes, or add entirely new courses to the schedule. If you have specialized learning needs or are looking for a course not included in these schedules, give us a call at 1-888-449-8931 or send an e-mail to lawsonlearning@lawson.com.

Lawson Learning Accelerator Highlights
Learning Accelerator Videos — We recently filmed three Learning Accelerator customers talking about how they use Lawson Learning Accelerator: Carpentersville School District (featured in May SimplySmarter), Owensboro Medical Health, and Oldcastle Architectural (coming soon). Watch the videos.

Webinars — Join our free webinars every second Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and learn how Lawson Learning Accelerator can help you speed up your Lawson and non-Lawson application training. Learn more and sign up today at www.lawson.com/LA_Wednesdays.

Jumpstart Workshop — One of the key competitive advantages of Learning Accelerator is that it’s the equivalent of several stand-alone tools rolled into one. To be truly effective using all the capabilities of Learning Accelerator Developer, you’ll need to begin with a jumpstart workshop. The minimum 5-day workshop for creating lessons and content can be expanded to 10 days.

Getting Started Service Bundle — Customers who have been working with Learning Accelerator are often interested in getting more assistance than what the Jumpstart workshop offers, but they are still limited by budget. The Getting Started bundle is a pre-defined and pre-priced service bundle of hours to design and develop Navigation and an
Application lesson that allows you to work with Lawson on the development, and learn the process and best practices to rapidly develop remaining lessons and content.

Recent vLab Earns Rave Review

This is like a dream come true!” exclaimed Naeem Haider in a text message to Instructor Shannon Herman during a recent Lawson virtual learning lab (vLab). Intrigued by his compliment, we gave Naeem a call to learn more about his experience in Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Security Basics — a course offering users the basic knowledge and hands-on experience they need to be successful with Lawson Security 9.0.

A database administrator at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Naeem professes to be a big fan of virtual training. He has supported Lawson applications for the past six years, and Security Basics was his first vLab experience with Lawson Learning. “Being able to take classes from my desk saves a lot of time,” he says. “For me traveling is not fun, so I’ll always appreciate anything offered through vLabs. I especially like the fact that you can put it into practice right away. No waiting to get back to the office.”

The hands-on approach of vLabs also appeals to Naeem. “Tangible is the best experience you can have,” he says. “You touch things, and you can learn a lot. You’re going to make mistakes, but doing it yourself will help you always remember — ‘Oh, this is not right.’” Naeem found the vLab experience to be very similar to traditional classroom training. “I was able to raise my hand and ask questions so that only the instructor could see, or allow everyone to see. The only difference is I wasn’t able to see what people look like.”

Naeem says he can easily devote three to five hours a day for a vLab session — and sometimes takes them back to back — because he is able to stay in his office and be physically present in case critical issues come up. When asked what inspired him to send his ‘a dream come true’ text message, Naeem said he made a discovery during class that excited him: He learned about security features available at the field level that would help him solve a challenge he’d been facing for months.

It’s clear that vLab training, with its hands-on exercises and well-thought-out approach, can be a mechanism for discovering features you may not have noticed during implementation. Training can offer more than just the basics you need to know; it can unlock nuggets of insight to enhance your skills and knowledge.
