"Ten years ago, Peter Senge introduced the idea of the 'learning organization' Now he says that for big companies to change, we need to stop thinking like mechanics and to start acting like gardeners."

– Alan M. Webber,

Tips and Hints

Q: When I travel to another time zone for training, I’m confused about the correct start time. How do I figure out what time to arrive for class?

A: Class time for all instructor-led public education sessions at regional training centers are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Even though the course confirmation you receive is based on your own time zone (unless you manually adjust it in the Learning Management System), you need to be aware that all live public education courses start at 9:00 a.m. For more detail see the attached PDF file about Managing Your Time Zone. There is a section on Attending Training in Another Time Zone.

If you still have questions or need more detail, send an e-mail to Lawson Learning at lawsonlearning@lawson.com.

If you have a hint to share — or would like a tip to help solve a problem you're facing — let us know and we'll send you an answer and consider it for a future issue.

Focus on Solutions

Keeping Your Organization Lawson Smart

How do I keep my organization Lawson Smart?

We’ve fine-tuned our Learning Tracks to specify the training you need to do your job wherever you are in your Lawson lifecycle. We map out the track; you just pick the one right for you.

Lawson Learning Tracks give you a clear idea of the training options available to you depending on the Lawson products you use, the job function you fulfill, and the phase you’re at in your Lawson learning lifecycle. We identify three phases: implement – when you and your organization are just getting started; optimize – when you and/or your organization are getting better at using Lawson after your implementation; and extend – when your organization is upgrading to a new version of Lawson.

We mapped out a series of recommended courses for each phase in your learning lifecycle. By following a Learning Track, not only will you get a clear idea of what you need to learn, you will also know when you need to learn it. There is no wasted time with unnecessary training. Whether you’re a new finance person at a company that has been using Lawson for years, or a buyer working with Lawson for the first time, Learning Tracks makes a direct connection between the training experience you need and where you work within the organization.

“This year we refined our Learning Tracks to go beyond recommendations for new Lawson implementations and upgrades to address employee changes post implementation. We launched three distinct sets of Learning Tracks at CUE 2008 in March, along with the opportunity for personalization based on unique organizational needs,” explains Victoria Helseth, Market Manager, Americas. “Many customers took advantage of this service, and we will continue offering customized assistance now that we’re back home,” Victoria adds.

Each Learning Track delivers a carefully thought-out approach, and includes different delivery modes and different lengths, all in the appropriate order. We reserve traditional instructor-led classes (which often involve travel for our customers) for critical and core knowledge that requires the guidance and hands-on practice of the classroom. The rest of the content we push to self-study and remote learning modes to help reduce the time and cost of travel.

With tracks matched to your learning lifecycle, and the option to further personalize the tracks for your organization, you’re not only keeping your organization Lawson Smart, but also helping to stretch the value of your training dollar. To order an electronic copy of these tracks, go to the Lawson Literature Order Form at www.lawson.com/orderlit. For more information about Lawson Learning Tracks, send an email to lawsonlearning@lawson.com or call us at 1-888-449-8931.

If you have a problem that's looking for a solution, send us an e-mail. We'll get back to you promptly, and consider featuring your question in a future issue of SimplySmarter.

Free Lawson Learning Accelerator Webinars

Lawson Learning Accelerator is an easy-to-use tool for creating role-based training simulations of the Lawson and non-Lawson applications that you use to run your business. Learn about the benefits at our free webinars scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month. Learn more at www.lawson.com/LA_Wednesdays.

Get the Long View – Lawson S3 Course Schedule Extended to Eight Months

By the end of April, Lawson Learning plans to publish a full eight months of S3 training opportunities. With this long range outlook, you will be able to plan your training schedule through the end of December 2008. We’ve created a core schedule you can count on that includes all the ‘bread and butter’ classes needed for implementation and general user training. The basic schedule will not change, but we may add additional sessions as demand increases. As we move through this phased approach over the next year, the M3 schedule will also be extended and added to the long range calendar.

Find ‘Your Space’ at Lawson Learning

To more effectively support every learner, we added extra resources and increased the number of Logical Partition Units (LPARS) for select Lawson System Foundation technology courses. We can now guarantee you’ll have your own space in appropriate technology classes. By giving learners their own environment, root access, and a unique hands-on experience, Lawson Learning ensures that everyone can perform key technical tasks more efficiently.

All in a Name – Popular Course Title to Change

Beginning June 1, we are changing the name of one of our technical classes to clarify its purpose. The course, LSF 9 Administration for Migration from Environment 8.0.3, will be renamed Lawson System Foundation 9.0 Administration Differences, 8.0.3/9.0. We hope this change will reduce confusion over what the course covers, which is the difference between the 8.0.3 environment and the new Lawson 9 environment. The course is designed for experienced Lawson System Administrators who have hands-on practice and knowledge of System Foundation 9.0 Administration and Migration tasks for Lawson S3 applications (both UNIX and Windows platforms). As you are planning your spring and summer training, please keep this change in mind.

More Time for Payroll Processing

After listening to suggestions from our customers, we’re expanding the Lawson Payroll Processing (US) 8.1/9.0 course from three days to four. Effective this April, learners will have more time to absorb the knowledge they need and to reinforce that knowledge in class with the instructor present. “We’re now able to cover additional core information and allow for more hands-on reinforcement of those key concepts,” said Dory Bross, senior learning consultant – HCM for Lawson Learning. “It just wasn’t enough time. Customers told us they wanted more opportunity for questions and not be rushed through,” she added. “This new format will give them exactly what they need.”

Fresh Ideas from CUE 2008

We had a great time at CUE 2008. Many of you stopped by the Lawson Learning Lab to sign up for training, ask questions, and play our lively version of ‘Deal or No Deal.’ As always, we learned as much, or more, from you as you may have learned from us.

Below are some of the questions you asked and the fresh perspectives you shared. Over the next several months, we plan to use SimplySmarter as a venue to answer your questions and pass along some tips.

But we’d like to hear from you as well:

  • Have you been successful convincing management about the cost benefits of training?
  • Do you have a process for developing ‘super users’ in your organization?
  • Did you take a course that really opened your eyes about the Lawson software you use everyday — by revealing something you didn’t realize it could do?

Let us know and we’ll help tell your story. And everyone will be the wiser. Send an e-mail to lawsonlearning@lawson.com or give us a call at 1-888-449-8931.

Watch for information on the topics below in future issues of SimplySmarter.

  • How do I convince my management of the cost benefits of investing in Lawson training?
  • What characteristics and training does a person need to become Lawson ‘super user’?
  • How do the Lawson Learning offerings relate to other tools and resources available from Lawson, such as the Knowledge Base and Support & Delivery?
  • Which Lawson Learning marketing manager should I contact with questions about educational services?
  • How do I know which Lawson courses to take?
